Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I started Central Oregon Horse and began advertising and selling horses in 1999.
What is your primary product or service?
To assist people who either don't have the knowledge or the time to properly advertise their horse, pony, donkey or mule for sale on the Internet and answer all inquiries in a timely manner.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I have owned and ridden horses for over 50 years and discovered how hard it was to sell a good horse out of the community or for a good price. When I started C.O.H. I sold three of my own horses out of the area (one to Idaho; one to California and one to Texas) by using a good photograph or two, giving a thorough and very honest and candid description of each horse, and answering the phone calls and emails quickly. Soon a friend asked me to help HER to sell HER horse; then another friend; then an acquaintance of a friend... etc. etcl and I was in business doing what I LOVE to do.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I believe my background of owning, raising, training and riding various breeds of horses for over 50 years, as well as being an avid reader of equestrian and horse-related magazines, plus my experience in sales, gives me a great advantage over others. I also have gotten pretty good taking photos of horses both being ridden or standing still (conformation shots); my reasonable listing fee ($35 for six months of advertising); my reasonable commission upon a sale (just 8.5%), and my dedication to finding a loving, appropriate home for each horse listed, sets me apart. I also ONLY put serious, 'qualified' potential buyers through to the horse's owner after they have answered all my questions to try to weed out any 'tire-kickers'.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
One location - in Bend, Oregon but I help people throughout Oregon, Washington AND Idaho to sell their horses.
What type of payments do you accept?
I accept cash and personal checks.
Which areas do you service?
I service all of Oregon, Idaho and Washington but have sold horses throughout the US including Hawaii and Alaska, Canada and even France.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
I personally am 'the company' doing 100% of all the work.
What are your hours of operation?
8 a.m. - 9 p.m., Monday through Sunday.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
Tears and hugs of joy for finding THEIR special 'baby' (horse) a wonderful new home with a special new person who will care for and love their horse as much as they have.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
'What goes around, comes around."
